Google DNS helps Webmasters and Surfers

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

google-public-dns Being a webmaster for a domain, you may face a situation when you have to change your server/ hosting. And this change involves the name server change, and resulting in downtime due to DNS propagation. This DNS change may take place in around 24-48 hours, but with Google’s DNS it takes place in few hours. I recently had a server change for one of mine domain to a new VPS. My ISP was not loading the page even after 10 hours of change, while the site was active and functional in most parts of the world.

Than i decided to use the new Google DNS as one of author Gaurav suggested me with it, as the site was loading fine at his end since the DNS change. And seriously speaking that was really amazing, just after doing the changes i was able to view my domain. And their was a drastic improvement in the browsing speed also, the pages are also loading very fast.

I recommend everyone to give the new Public DNS from Google a try and experience the future of the coming web. The new DNS from Google are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, if you have problem implementing these do check our coming post setting up Google DNS on your machine.

Just check the Google.com/ncr to perform the no country redirect search, his search goes global.

I hope that you will definitely give it a try.

Their were certain ip’s and domain, that we have posted on Unauthorized sites that might have used your adsense those were actually having Google’s NCR search page.

Beta Testing for New adsense Interface

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Today, while checking my mail that i uses to do 3-4 times in day, i had a invitation from Adsense Team that they had chosen me as beta tester for its new adsense interface.

Lets talk about the new interface, its fast, its beautiful, the representation had come in dashboard just like your analytics stats. This helps you compare your daily earnings in various metric revenue per ad, targeting, and bid types etc. I will be covering it completely in my upcoming posts are exploring it fully and comparing it with the old version.

This is a partial copy of the mail sent by adsense covering some of the features that will be their in the new interface, official AdSense blog.

Hi,
We’ve been building a new AdSense interface to help publishers get more out of the program, and we’re excited to invite you to participate in a limited beta test. As one of the selected beta testers, you’ll have a first look at the new interface, which includes these benefits:
- Comprehensive performance reports: View your daily stats in graph format, and gain insight into new metrics such as the amount you’re earning from different ad types, targeting types, and bid types.
- Quicker account maintenance: We’ve streamlined the process for a number of common tasks to help you get things done more quickly. Whether you’re trying to update your contact information or make a change to a number of ad units at the same time, you’ll find that these types of tasks require fewer clicks and less account navigation than before.
- Prominent help links: There’s now help content available on every page, so you’ll be able to quickly find answers to your questions while navigating through your account

Here is a sample screen shot of the new adsense interface, its a complete dashboards experience.

Unauthorized sites that might have used your adsense

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Recently visiting my Adsense account and viewing the list of sites authorized to show my ad codes, i founded one more list of site. This list was the list of sites that are unauthorized and are using your ad codes. Actually, looking into the details over it and viewing these sites, i founded out most of these sites are replica of Google’s homepage, some are redirected to bing.com like cc.bingj.com, some opens at yahoo 404 error page, some open as microsofttranslator.com and lastly www.freeproxy.ws and mail.google.com were not opening.

unauthorised sites adsense

list of unauthorised sites in adsense

Now lets look one by one about IP addresses and the truth behind:

  1. Google Homepage Replica’s
On checking the Whois details of the IP’s and domain’s we founded out that they all operates on the same name servers over which Google operates. The question arises why and how are these domain’s reflecting our ad codes when their source is genuine.
  2. Bingj.com, Microsofttranslator.com (Bing Translator), IP’s
Its the same story just like the Google homepage replica. But their is diversification in the domains that land in the end. similarly checking the DNS records for the IP’s we founded that the resulting DNS are same.
  3. Yahoo 404 error pages
IP’s that end up on yahoo 404 error pages are also owned by yahoo as per the DNS record. The last IP (203.104.18.42) in the list reflects that its owned by India Yahoo! Web Services India Pvt Ltd Internet Content Provider.
  4. mail.google.com
I have no idea about this expect that i uses this URL 10-15 times in a day,yet i was unable to open the link. Yes just try these two links http://www.mail.google.com and http://mail.google.com . First i tried the link with www. and i got shocked, Google is down and than after 2-3 tries i removed the www. and tried again, things went fine now. But the question still remains why these sites displayed my ad codes and entered in the authorized list of Adsense.
  5. www.freeproxy.ws
I tried to open this link but the site was down, its a proxy site that i have used a lot of time to access sites during my college days. Their might be a change that someone had opened my site through this proxy. The ads in the frame of proxy site will be treated as ads displayed by the proxy sites itself.

So, have a allowed sites list to protect yourself. You never know when things become nasty for adsense publishers, and prevention is the best practice.

As all these sites are genuine and part of a trusted network, so no need to worry. What i think of these IP’s is that they are used to run various services like gmodules, translate, crawling etc, separate from the Google’s main domain. The data gathered and generated over these IP’s is later on linked to the main domain as a sub-domain, without putting load on the main domain.
