Plagiarism

Plagiarism

Lets begin the education section highlighting the word plagiarism which is a trouble for most of the students. For those who are new to the world of work review, its something that tells about your original work and the others works.

Plagiarism does not limits itself to the words copy, paste and borrowing others works. As per the definition of Plagiarism from Wikipedia it states that

Plagiarism, as defined in the 1995 Random House Compact Unabridged Dictionary, is the “use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one’s own original work.”

As the stating focus we have on the students, so we will be focusing on the academic plagiarism and its consequences. Students submitting there thesis, research and graduate projects needs to take it very seriously as the academic council could expel you such an act.

One question that must be buzzing in your head must be “its imposible to avoid plagiarism, so are we going to be screwed up? “. Well friends during your research or submission of some work you will be refering the internet for it, as there are certain facts that can’nt be changed like “earth rises in the east and sets in the west, gravity theory was given by newton.”. So understanding these criterias your school, college or university sets a amount of plagiarism allowed in your work, it can be 50%, 60% or x% depending on your institute.

Highlighting on the points that are considered as plagiarism below:

  • turning in someone else’s work as your own
  • copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
  • failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
  • giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
  • changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
  • copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not

Rather than writing these points again i appreciate the work of plagiarism.org for writing these points with just a clarity.

The credit for the original work should be given to the original composer, like i have stated above in this post at two places. Similarly, you should also specify the sources from where you have gathered the information. This could be in the form of acknowledgement, references, citation or bibliography.

Other types of plaigarism that exists in the society apart from academics are:

  • Journalism
  • Online (web based)
  • Software code plagiarism
  • Self plagiarism
  • etc

So, take these steps to avoid plagiarism. In the next post i will be covering the softwares used for academic plagiarism, and after that a post covering tricks to beat the plagiarism softwares.
